Teaching Amid Election-Related Stressors

Our teaching context during Fall 2020 is troubled by an ongoing pandemic and social unrest. Now, as we near the 2020 election, stressors are increasing even further. As we struggle to focus on course content and wrapping up the semester, both faculty and students report feeling disoriented and overwhelmed. We want to engage in discussions about national and global events with our students—yet good intentions don’t always bring great results. Should we address the coming election on the days leading up to November 3 and if so, how?

Once the election takes place, we know that students will have their own excitement and disappointments to deal with—as will we. How can we acknowledge the strong emotions and results of the election without offending someone? How can we interact humanely with a diverse group of students without triggering an adverse response?
