Cutting-edge research facilities 

The School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, ranked in the top 20 graduate programs in the country by the National Research Council, maintains cutting edge research facilities for materials characterization in five recently completed buildings designed for interdisciplinary research and collaboration. To augment academic departments, a number of "centers" have been formed to nurture interdisciplinary research in organic electronics, chemical evolution, optical and mass spectrometry imaging, computational chemistry, astrobiochemistry, molecular biophysics, biomaterials, and laser dynamics.

Prioritizing students

With a current enrollment of approximately 200 students and a student-to-faculty ratio of 5:1, the goal of the Chemistry and Biochemistry graduate program is to train the next generation of leaders to tackle the scientific and technological challenges confronting humankind in the 21st century. Several active student-governed programs, such as the Women in Chemistry Committee, Chapter of NOBCChE, and Chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma, help our graduate students enrich their experience while at Georgia Tech. In addition, the Graduate Student Forum (GSF) organizes school-wide social activities and is managed by an elected group of graduate students.

Core and interdisciplinary graduate degrees offered


Applications are being accepted for positions in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Ph.D. program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The School of Chemistry and Biochemistry has research strengths in a wide variety of fields and emphasizes interdisciplinary efforts both within and external to our department. Applications for 2024 open on August 14, 2023. Submit by December 1st, 2023, for priority consideration for Fall 2024. Late applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Funding Information

Students are usually supported on teaching and research assistantships with health insurance coverage starting at $33,500 (plus waiver of tuition) in Fall 2023. Several fellowships are available to highly qualified candidates. Early application is strongly recommended for consideration for these awards.

Fellowships include:
  • Presidential Fellowships provide an additional $5,500 per year, for up to four years of graduate study towards the Ph.D. William
  • Emerson Fellowships consist of supplemental award of $2,000 for the first year of graduate study. A limited number of these awards will be renewable for the second year.
  • Goizueta Fellowships are available to exceptional Hispanic/Latino students whose families currently reside in the United States. This fellowship provides a $4,000 supplement to the departmental assistantship.

After graduation

After graduation, students are employed by top corporations such as Dow, DuPont, Solvay, Celanese, Kimberly-Clark, Procter and Gamble, Coca-Cola; federal agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Homeland Security; and several U.S. national labs.
