Rising Tide

The Rising Tide Program is a faculty development and recruitment program in the College of Sciences at Georgia Tech. Current Rising Tide programming includes the: (1) Rising Tide Fellowship Program, and (2) Rising Tide Faculty Application Short Course (in collaboration with CPIES). The program is led by Professor Alexander Robel, and is funded through generous donations to the College and matching funds from the Provost’s Office. Rising Tide programming is developed and facilitated in-house by Dr. Tammy McCoy (GT CTL) and Dr. Karena Nguyen (GT Postdoctoral Services) using best practices and evidence-based approaches to faculty career development.

The GT Rising Tide Fellowship Program

The Rising Tide Fellowship Program develops promising early-career scientists for the academic job market and careers as faculty members at Georgia Tech and other institutions.  Fellows participate in a year-long program where they are mentored by GT Faculty, attend a week-long intensive workshop on campus at Georgia Tech, and then receive continuing support from the program during their faculty search process. Mentoring and workshop activities revolve around developing fellow skills in:

  • Defining a coherent vision for their career goals as a faculty members
  • Writing competitive application statements
  • The elements of an effective CV
  • Answering faculty interview questions
  • Communicating science through job and chalk talks
  • Teaching on the tenure track
  • Identifying and pursuing leadership and service opportunities
  • Proposal writing and grant management
  • Advising students

Georgia Tech faculty mentors submit nominations for Rising Tide Fellowship candidates who show potential to contribute as faculty members within the vibrant scientific community in the College of Sciences and beyond. Rising Tide Fellows come from a wide range of institutions and locations, but eligibility is currently restricted to current PhD candidates or those who received their PhD less than 3 years prior to the time of nomination. Fellows are selected on the basis of their promise as faculty members and alignment with Georgia Tech hiring priorities. Please reach out to Rising Tide Director, Professor Alexander Robel, if you have any questions about the Rising Tide Fellowship.
